김선우 작가의 작품 세계를 관통하는 핵심 키워드는 ‘여행’입니다. 작가는 도도새라는 상징적인 캐릭터를 통해 인간의 바람과 꿈을 투영하며, 낯설고 다양한 환경을 유랑하는 여정 그 자체를 시각적으로 그려냅니다. 저는 이 책이 단순한 도록을 넘어, 캔버스 위를 여행하는 도도새가 거닐 수 있는 물리적인 ‘새로운 세계’가 되기를 바랐습니다. 시작과 끝이 정해진 지면의 시퀀스를 따라 끝까지 읽어 내려가는 과정은 독자가 탐험하는 하나의 완벽한 ‘여행지’와 같습니다. 우리의 여행은 떠남과 돌아옴이라는 구조를 가지지만, 그 경험을 안고 언제든 다시 출발할 수 있는 열린 결말을 지닙니다. 이 책의 디자인 역시 책장을 넘기는 행위 자체가 하나의 즐거운 여정이 되며, 언제든 다시 책을 펼쳤을 때 그 여행이 계속해서 이어질 수 있는 구조를 담아냈습니다.
The central theme running through artist Kim Sunwoo＊s work is the concept of a journey. Through the symbolic character of the dodo bird, the artist projects human hopes and dreams, visually capturing the very essence of wandering through unfamiliar and diverse environments.
I wanted this book to be more than just an exhibition catalog; I envisioned it as a physical new world where the dodo bird, traveling across the canvas, could roam freely. The process of reading through the sequence of pages〞from a defined beginning to an end〞is akin to the reader exploring a complete travel destination.
A journey structurally consists of a departure and a return, yet it holds an open ending, allowing us to set off again at any time with the experiences we have gathered. The design of this book reflects this exact structure: the act of turning the pages becomes a joyful journey in itself, designed so that whenever the book is opened again, the voyage continues.
